Walk Around Illinois

University of Illinois Extension encourages all of Illinois to "Walk Around Illinois" to promote physical activity across the state. Walking is the best way to start a new fitness program because almost everyone can do it, it's free and it's easy.

To start a walking program, simply wear comfortable shoes and step outside your door. If fitness is your goal, walk at a steady pace.

The USDA MYPyramid Plan at http://www.mypyramid.gov/ promotes healthful eating and physical activity. It recommends for health benefits, physical activity should be moderate or vigorous and add up to at least 30 minutes a day. Walking briskly (about 3 ½ miles per hour) is a moderate form of physical activity. Walking can help you meet your personal goal for good health, mental well-being, and a healthy body weight.

Depending on your condition, if you have been inactive, you will benefit from a slower pace. If you have been active and are in better shape, you will have to walk faster and/or farther to improve your current condition.
